The Majority Leader, Hon. Maimana Ayariga, and the Minority Leader, Hon. Osei Afenyo-Markin, have commended the Hansard editors of Parliament for their crucial role in promoting transparency and accountability in parliamentary proceedings.
At the 11th Biennial Commonwealth Hansard Editors Association, Africa Region Conference, Hon. Ayariga described the Hansard — the official record of parliamentary proceedings — as a pillar of democracy. He emphasized its significance for transparency, accountability, and as a scholarly digital record that preserves parliamentary history.
He said the theme of the conference, “Charting the Future of Hansard: Embracing Technology and Innovation for Enhanced Parliamentary Reporting”, directly addresses both the challenges and opportunities facing Hansard editors.
Hon. Ayariga stressed that the integrity of democratic processes depends not only on what is said and done in Parliament, but also on how it is captured, preserved, and made accessible to the public.
He added that the gathering of skilled professionals from across Africa offers a unique opportunity for knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and inspiration.
“I trust that the ideas exchanged here will contribute immensely to strengthening our institutions and deepening democratic governance across the continent,” he said.
Hon. Ayariga saluted the dedication and professionalism of Hansard officers, noting that their work often goes unnoticed, though it remains fundamental to the functioning of Parliament.
The Minority Leader, Hon. Osei Afenyo-Markin, described the Hansard as an indispensable resource that serves as a reference document for decision-making, as well as a research material for academics and civil society organizations.
He emphasized that the work of Hansard officers is integral to fast-tracking parliamentary business and sustaining democracy.
He also expressed gratitude to the men and women of the Hansard Office for always being dependable in producing reliable parliamentary transcripts.
Furthermore, Hon. Afenyo-Markin called for the digitalization of parliamentary records to ensure easy accessibility and to keep pace with the world, cautioning leaders not to be left behind in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
